Coast Watch - Scotian Shelf Management Plan

http://eshore-ns.blogspot.com

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada is hosting a series of community meetings along the Shore this month to discuss the draft of their "Eastern Scotian Shelf Integrated Management Plan (ESSIM).

The 'plan', according to the overview document, covers the actions to be taken by DFO over the next 5 years along the stretch of coast between Ecum Secum and Canso.

Inviting all stakeholders to provide input, DFO states that ESSIM will 'set out objectives and strategies for the sustainable use and conservation of the area' which runs right past the offshore oil and gas gateway.

DFO states that the 'integrated management plan' is a new management model that will "consider the relationships of the many different ocean users, and between humans and the environment".

Well, I may be an alarmist, but the last time we heard the term 'integrated management', it came from the Department of Natural Resources with respect to our diminishing forested areas.

We thought it sounded pretty fair until we suddenly realized that DNR was delisting our provincial wildlife sanctuaries under the "IM" banner and leaving the gates open to even more clearcutting and devastation by multinational companies.

A 'heads up', just in case. Meetings will be held in the Bay of Islands region (Sheet Harbour & Moser River) on October 25 and in Guysborough on October 26.

If you live or work along the Eastern coastline, you need to be there...don't miss it.
